CORRESPONDENCE COURSE

 

Thank you for your interest in my Chinese brush painting correspondence course. Here are the guidelines and terms and conditions. Please fill out the application form below and any questions you may have. and we will be contact you.  

 

GENERAL COURSE GUIDELINES

 

OBJECTIVES:

The objective of James Tan’s correspondence courses is to raise the general understanding and standards of Chinese brush painting and to promote and further develop Chinese culture.

 

COVERAGE: 

Classes will be conducted by mail and email in a step-by-step tutorial fashion designed to increase students’ skill and interest in the art of Chinese brush painting.  Major topics include:

1.   Both traditional and Lingnan schools of Chinese brush painting techniques.

2.   Fundamental theories underlying Chinese brush painting to include proper use of brush, proper use of ink and color, and the techniques of copying and imitating and composition.

3.   Subjects:  flowers, birds, animals, landscapes, vegetables, insects and fish.

 

CLASSES:

Classes will be conducted by correspondence, using Chinese painting samples provided by the instructor. Students will enroll in an initial 3-month period of instruction, and, if so desired, may extend in monthly increments thereafter, giving 30 days notice to insure continuity.

 

PROCEDURES:

Upon receipt of registration and payment, the instructor will forward the student’s homework for the first 1 1/2 months: Total of 9 paintings sample will be send to the student. (P.S.  6 paintings sample each month, 3 small and 3 medium) and how to do your home work by tape or CD. At the end of the first month, the student will return the first 6 paintings, together with [1] the work the student has done and [2] questions for the instructor. Upon receipt,.

 

The instructor will [1] correct the student’s work, [2] address the student’s questions and [3] forward the next set of 6 paintings sample and CD or tape.  If the student elects to continue beyond the initial 3 month period, the student will notify the instructor by the end of the second month and (upon receipt of payment) an additional 6 sample paintings will be provided.  This procedure will continue as long as the student is enrolled.  If the student decides to terminate, all sample paintings will be returned to the instructor.  

 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS 

TUITION:  US$360 for the first three months of enrollment and US$120 for each month thereafter, payable by check or money order or by a Pay Pal account.

EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES: 

Students must provide their own painting equipment and supplies.  Upon request, the instructor will provide a list of needed supplies and a list of suppliers. 

 

LENDING OF INSTRUCTOR’S CHINESE PAINTING SAMPLES: 

 

  1. The instructor’s Chinese painting samples will be sent to the student in a cardboard mailing tube provided by the instructor. 

  2. To minimize the possibility of damage, the samples must not be removed from the sealed plastic envelopes UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

  3. The student shall use the mailing tube to return the sample paintings and the homework.  Questions for the instructor may be included with the homework or sent via email.

  4. Samples will be sent by registered mail at the instructor’s expense and returned to the instructor by registered mail at the student’s expense.

  5. ALL PAINTING SAMPLES REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THE INSTRUCTOR AND MAY BE CIRCULATED ONLY AMONG CURRENT STUDENTS WITH THE SPECIFIC PERMISSION OF THE INSTRUCTOR.

  6. NOTE:  Borrowers of painting samples are responsible for keeping them CLEAN and FREE OF DAMAGES.  In case of any loss and/or damages to the sample's), borrower shall compensate the instructor appropriately

Master Class4*     " Chinese Landscape "

 

This intensive course with Chinese brush painting Master James Tan will introduce students in experience the Oriental approach and dynamic energy or " ch'i ". "ch'i" is a breath of heaven, spirit, vital force and the vivifying principle.

 

The other techniques required to achieve the mystical beauty, majesty and serenity of the contemporary Chinese landscape.  You will learn to render mist-laden mountains, eloquent trees, shimmering waterfalls and other elements that enhance the mood and atmosphere of your piece while being mindful of dynamic composition, texture, colour and value to create poetic and powerful paintings.  You will be guided through the process with in-depth demonstrations and individual attention.


 Master Class 6*    

The 4 Seasons Landscape or Flower & Birds

The Lingnan school of Chinese brush painting is acclaimed world-wide for its freshness and vibrancy of colour and spirit, bringing a new richness, depth and creative energy to the traditional styles of Chinese brush painting. This exciting course will cover the techniques for painting the the four seasons flower and birds.

 

Or the four seasons landscape. James Tan will introduce students to the techniques required to achieve the mystical beauty, majesty and serenity of the contemporary Chinese landscape. You will learn to render mist-laden mountains, eloquent trees, shimmering waterfalls and other elements that enhance the mood and atmosphere of your piece while being mindful of dynamic composition, texture, colour and value to create poetic and powerful paintings.

 

Each step will be thoroughly explained and demonstrated by master artist and teacher James Tan, and will include discussion and practice in composition, brush handling, colour, imitating and copying life, and acquiring a foundation in correct technique.  

 


Master Class 7* Flower & Birds   

Lotus, Peony, Iris, Orchid, Rose, Sunflower and more.......

 

The Lingnan school of Chinese brush painting is acclaimed world-wide for its freshness and vibrancy of colour and spirit, bringing a new richness, depth and creative energy to the traditional styles of Chinese brush painting. This exciting course will cover the techniques for painting the exquisite Lotus, as well as Peonies, Wisteria, Iris, Chrysanthemum and the sublime Orchid. You will learn to paint a variety of delightful small birds, which breathe life and character into your study of nature, and you will start to develop the significant skill required to achieve the brilliant flashes of goldfish in water. Each step will be thoroughly explained and demonstrated by master artist and teacher James Tan, and will include discussion and practice in composition, brush handling, colour, imitating and copying life, and acquiring a foundation in correct technique.  


 Master Class 9*  Lotus World

 

This intensive course with Chinese brush painting Master James Tan introduce the lotus flowers and birds to students, and how to the used the brush painting techniques and other elements that enhance the mood and atmosphere of your piece while being mindful of dynamic composition, texture, colour and value to create poetic and powerful paintings.  You will be guided through step by step to process with in-depth demonstrations and individual attention. to do and to create your own work.

 


 Class 3*  Basics Chinese Brush Painting

 

 

This intensive course with Chinese brush painting Master James Tan will introduce and demonstrate the basics of Chinese brush painting, including painting techniques and the proper use of equipment and materials (brushes, ink, colour, paper and Chinese stamps).  Subjects to be taught will include flowers, small and large birds, and basic landscapes.   Participants will be instructed on how to hold the brush properly and the use of various brush strokes; on how to create backgrounds and on proper wash techniques.  In addition to instruction and demonstrations, participants will have the opportunity to create their own work and to receive personalized instruction.

 


 Master Class 8*  Create your own Painting       Mixed Media

 

This 8-session intensive course with Chinese brush painting Master James Tan will introduce students how to the used the brush painting techniques and other elements that enhance the mood and atmosphere of your piece while being mindful of dynamic composition, texture, colour and value to create poetic and powerful paintings.  You will be guided through the process with in-depth demonstrations and individual attention. to do and to create your own work.
